Training and Racing Clothing

Training Shoes –These are shoes specifically designed for running.  They should be purchased (as least the first time) at a reputable running store (The Running Zone, Fleet Feet) where a qualified professional can fit you with the proper shoes.  A striped or polo shirt does not qualify someone to fit you with running shoes. These shoes should be used for cross country only; they should not be worn at school or just to walk around in.  Typically, good training shoes can be purchased for $80 - $100 and have useful life span of about 300 - 400 miles (about three months on our schedule).

Athletic Clothing – NO COTTON SOCKS!!  We are adamant about socks.  Cotton is the worst possible fabric for running socks.  Synthetic socks are more expensive, but the moisture-wicking abilities of fabrics designed for running—Coolmax or other synthetic fabrics—are superior to conventional cotton clothing.  Cotton traps moisture and causes chafing and blisters.  So, we also recommend synthetic fabric shirts and shorts, but we’re not as insane about that.  Shorts cut for running are best, but mesh athletic shorts are also fine.  Long shorts cut for basketball (at or below the knee) are not appropriate and will actually hamper a runner’s form.

Racing Flats – These are lightweight, tractioned shoes designed for the sole purpose of competition on a trail.  This optional item will increase speed and foot turnover during a race, but are probably not necessary or appropriate for novice runners.  They provide no support and little cushioning.  These can be found at any running specialty store and typically cost $40 - $80.

Team T-shirts - These shirts will be provided to each member by The Running Zone; they are not designed to be used as daily workout wear.   Each athlete should make it a point to wear their shirt on race days.

Warm-ups - We will be taking orders for warm-up sweats.  These optional items will be available for about $50 - $75.
